Know the KS3 Sambar
KS3 is the rear-drive Sambar truck of 1990 to 1999 — and rear drive here is literal, because Subaru hung the engine behind the rear axle rather than putting it under the cab. The engine itself is the one thing no other kei truck had: the EN07, a 658cc inline *four*, where every rival used three cylinders. Weight over the driven axle and four smaller pistons are the two reasons Sambar owners talk about these the way they do.
The gauge reads 16,000 miles, or about 25,700 km as it was marked from the factory — a low figure by the standards of the Sambar's Japanese working life.
The practical side
Rear-wheel drive on a kei truck puts the drive where the load is. With the engine under or behind the cab and the bed directly over the driven axle, adding weight to the deck improves traction rather than hurting it — the opposite of what happens on a front-driven vehicle.
Mid-band pricing on a kei truck generally reflects a sound, unremarkable specification — the four-wheel-drive, five-speed, flat-bed combination that the majority of buyers are looking for in the first place.
How to take it
Because it was built in 1991, the federal 25-year exemption applies and the usual FMVSS and EPA conformity requirements fall away. We take care of the entry documents and the title, then arrange shipping to wherever you are. It is listed at $6,615. Get in touch to put a hold on it.
