Kei Vans for Sale

A kei van takes the same 660cc platform as the trucks and encloses it. You keep the compact footprint, the tight turning circle and the frugal running costs, but the load area is now dry, lockable and out of sight — which matters when the cargo is tools, stock, equipment or camping gear rather than gravel.

The cab-over layout makes these remarkable packagers. Because the engine sits under or behind the seats rather than in a nose, almost the entire body length becomes usable space. Rear and side doors typically open wide onto a flat floor, and many have fold-flat or removable rear seating so the van switches between carrying people and carrying cargo in a couple of minutes.

The Daihatsu Hijet Cargo and Suzuki Every are the straightforward panel vans of the class — simple, immensely common in Japan, and easy to live with. The Subaru Sambar Dias leans more comfortable, and supercharged examples turn up with noticeably more pull for the same size. Deck van variants are the interesting middle ground: a shortened enclosed cabin with a small open bed behind it, so you can carry passengers and still throw something dirty in the back without it travelling inside with you.

Four-wheel drive is common here, which makes these genuinely useful year-round on unpaved access roads, campsites and farm tracks. Kei vans have also become a favourite base for micro-camper conversions — the flat floor, standing-height variants and low running costs make far more sense for that than a full-size van.
