S130-series Atrai: the short version

S130 is the four-wheel-drive Atrai of the mid-1990s — the Hijet van platform with passenger seating and the selectable front axle from the commercial range. Daihatsu sold it as a small family vehicle rather than a working van, which is why examples turn up with more equipment than any Hijet of the same years.

Six figures, at 102,000 miles or approximately 164,200 km. Daihatsu designed the 659cc EF and the later KF as working engines for a vehicle sold almost entirely to trades and farms.

What it is for

A four-wheel-drive kei van is a small, dry, lockable load box that will still leave a sealed road. The engine sits under the cab floor in the usual kei arrangement and the front axle is selected from inside, so the van drives as a rear-driver until it needs not to. Within the class this is the most practical all-weather configuration there is.

Kei vans above $8,000 tend to be passenger-trimmed versions — seats, glass, trim, air conditioning — rather than plain cargo shells, or later chassis built on the wider post-1998 kei dimensions.
