Not every interesting Japanese vehicle fits a category. This is where the rest lands — light commercial trucks like the Nissan Atlas and Vanette, compact SUVs such as the Daihatsu Terios, factory and converted campers, and the occasional genuine oddity like a Nissan March BOX.

These are one-off buys rather than a stocked line, which is exactly what makes the category worth watching. If you want something nobody else at the show or the job site will have, this is usually where it is.

Light commercial trucks a size up from kei — the Atlas and Vanette among them — suit buyers who need more payload and bed length than a 660cc truck can offer but still want something far more manoeuvrable than an American work truck. Compact SUVs like the Terios split the difference between a kei 4x4 and a full-size vehicle: usable rear seats and load space, without the bulk. Camper conversions turn up periodically, from factory-built specials to well-executed private conversions.

Because stock here is genuinely varied, specifications differ far more than in our other categories. Read each listing carefully — drivetrain, transmission, engine and recorded odometer are stated per vehicle, with a full photo set and often a walkaround video.
