Beyond the kei class, we import the Japanese domestic-market sedans, coupes and sports cars that were never officially sold in the United States — or that were sold here in noticeably lower specification than the versions built for home-market buyers.

The appeal is specification and condition. Japanese-market cars frequently arrived with more powerful engines, better trim and equipment that never made the export list, and Japan's inspection culture and lower average mileages mean surviving examples are often remarkably solid. For a great many of these models, importing is the only realistic way to own one at all.

The Nissan Silvia needs little introduction — rear-wheel drive, turbocharged in Spec R form, and one of the defining Japanese sports cars of its era. The Toyota Crown Majesta sits at the opposite end: a V8, rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan built to a standard Toyota reserved for its home market, and startlingly good value for what it is. The Honda Torneo Euro R brings the high-revving H22A and a close-ratio manual in an unassuming four-door body.

Alongside those, Subaru, Mazda and Volkswagen models pass through as they become available. Stock in this category moves quickly and rarely repeats, so if something here interests you it is worth asking early.

Because these are ordinary passenger cars, registering them is usually simpler than registering a kei truck — the federal 25-year exemption is the main gate, and vehicles that clear it are generally straightforward to title.
