What draws buyers to Japanese domestic-market vans is condition and specification for the money. Japan's inspection regime and typically lower annual mileages mean a twenty-year-old van from there is often in markedly better order than a same-age vehicle that spent its life on salted roads. Specification tends to be generous too: power steering, air conditioning, electric windows and comfortable trim on vehicles that were built as everyday family and trade transport rather than stripped-out commercials.

These vans get bought for three broad reasons. As working vans they are cheap to run, easy to park and simple to maintain. As camper and day-van conversions they offer a flat floor, huge interior volume for the exterior size, and a base vehicle far cheaper than a European equivalent. And as curiosities — a right-hand-drive Japanese van is a genuinely uncommon thing on American roads, and models like the Honda Vamos have a devoted following.
