The Jimny is a real off-road vehicle built to kei dimensions rather than a small SUV styled to look like one. It keeps a separate ladder frame, rigid axles and a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a genuine low-range transfer case — the hardware a full-size off-roader uses, packaged inside Japan’s statutory kei footprint.

The generation that qualifies for US import under the 25-year rule is largely the JA11 and JA22, with the JB23 following from 1998. Turbocharged 657cc engines are common across the range, and the short wheelbase that makes the Jimny awkward at highway speed is exactly what makes it work on a tight trail.
