Know the Suzuki

Kei vehicles are defined by Japanese statute rather than by market segment, with hard ceilings on length, width, height and engine displacement. Manufacturers build exactly to those limits, which is why a modern kei truck feels so much larger inside than its footprint suggests.

The odometer records 7,246 miles, which is in the region of 11,700 km in the units the dial was printed in — toward the low end for a Carry-family vehicle coming out of Japan.

The configuration

A four-wheel-drive kei van is a small, dry, lockable load box that will still leave a sealed road. The engine sits under the cab floor in the usual kei arrangement and the front axle is selected from inside, so the van drives as a rear-driver until it needs not to. Within the class this is the most practical all-weather configuration there is.

In this band a kei van is carrying specification: four-wheel drive, a turbocharged engine, a high-roof body or a factory conversion. The plain commercial versions do not reach this far.
