Background on the Hijet

Daihatsu replaced the EF three-cylinder with the twin-cam, 12-valve KF series in the later Hijets, and kept everything else that makes the model what it is: a cab-over truck or van engineered to the 3.40-metre kei limit, offered in more factory body styles than any competitor. The Hijet has been in production under that name since 1960.

It carries 24,167 miles — about 38,900 km, the figure the gauge was actually calibrated in. That is at the lower end of the spread for Daihatsu kei vehicles leaving the Japanese market.

What it is for

A four-wheel-drive kei van is a small, dry, lockable load box that will still leave a sealed road. The engine sits under the cab floor in the usual kei arrangement and the front axle is selected from inside, so the van drives as a rear-driver until it needs not to. Within the class this is the most practical all-weather configuration there is.

In this band a kei van is carrying specification: four-wheel drive, a turbocharged engine, a high-roof body or a factory conversion. The plain commercial versions do not reach this far.
