Know the KS4 Sambar

KS4 denotes the selectable four-wheel-drive version of Subaru's fifth-generation Sambar, produced from 1990 until 1999. Its 658cc EN07 is an inline-four — unique in a class of three-cylinders — and it sits behind the rear axle under the bed floor, which puts the engine's mass where a kei truck most needs it. Subaru offered the EN07 in carburetted, fuel-injected and supercharged forms across the range.

Odometer: 49,700 miles, approximately 80,000 km. Subaru's EN07 is a 658cc inline-four rather than a triple, so it turns over with four smaller reciprocating masses than anything else in the class, and the model's surviving population covers a wide span of readings.

Why this configuration

Selecting four-wheel drive in a Sambar brings in a front axle on a vehicle whose engine already sits at the very back, behind the rear axle line. That rearward weight bias is deliberate and it is unique in the class. The bed above it stays flat and unobstructed because nothing mechanical runs underneath it.

We quote this truck individually. Where it has to travel is the single biggest swing on the final figure, so the honest thing is to ask for your delivery address first and give you one number afterwards.

Next steps

At 1995 it is past the 25-year mark, which is the line that decides whether a Japanese-market vehicle can be imported at all. Import documentation and titling are handled at our end, and we ship nationwide. A walkaround clip sits with the photographs on this page. Ask us for a price and include your delivery state; we will quote the vehicle and the transport together.
