KS4 Sambar: the short version
The KS4 is the four-wheel-drive Sambar truck built through the 1990s, and it inherits the layout Subaru stuck with long after everyone else abandoned it: the 658cc EN07 four-cylinder mounted at the very back, behind the rear axle line. Drive runs forward to the front wheels when selected. Four cylinders in a kei engine is the Sambar's signature, and the rear weight bias is why it is the one people pick for traction with an empty bed.
The recorded reading is 77,200 miles — somewhere around 124,200 km. Subaru built the rear-mounted EN07 for the commercial duty cycle these vehicles were sold into, and high five-figure readings are the norm rather than the exception.
In use
A four-wheel-drive Sambar is traction-biased before the front axle is even engaged, because Subaru put the engine behind the rear wheels. The rear tyres carry the engine's weight permanently, which is the thing Sambar owners single the truck out for — an empty kei truck bed is light, and the Sambar is the one that minds it least.
Under $5,000 is the entry point for an imported kei truck in the United States, and it generally means an older vehicle with a higher reading on the clock rather than a compromised one. Our kei truck price guide sets out what separates the bands.
To proceed
The 1995 build year puts it outside the 25-year window that restricts importing vehicles built to a foreign specification. You do not deal with the import paperwork; we do, and we organise delivery to your address. A walkaround clip sits with the photographs on this page. The asking price is $4,230 — contact us to reserve it.
