A little context

Subaru's Sambar is unusual in the kei class for its rear-biased engine placement, a layout Subaru held to for many generations. Owners tend to single it out for ride quality and traction over the load axle.

Kei vehicles are a formal class in Japanese law rather than a marketing segment: length, width, height and engine displacement are all capped by statute, and manufacturers engineer to those limits exactly. That is why these trucks feel so much larger inside than their footprint suggests.
