Know the Sambar

Subaru built the 1990s Sambar unlike anything else in the class: the 658cc EN07 is an inline-four rather than a triple, and it sits behind the rear axle instead of under the cab. That puts the engine's weight over the driven wheels and leaves the cab floor completely clear. Subaru offered it carburetted, fuel-injected and supercharged across the range.

Reading the specification

Selecting four-wheel drive in a Sambar brings in a front axle on a vehicle whose engine already sits at the very back, behind the rear axle line. That rearward weight bias is deliberate and it is unique in the class. The bed above it stays flat and unobstructed because nothing mechanical runs underneath it.

Between $8,000 and $12,000 the market moves from ordinary trucks to better ones: later chassis, lower readings, fuel injection, air conditioning, or a factory option that is hard to find. The step up from the mid band is usually specification rather than condition.
