What the KS4 Sambar is

The KS4 is the four-wheel-drive Sambar truck built through the 1990s, and it inherits the layout Subaru stuck with long after everyone else abandoned it: the 658cc EN07 four-cylinder mounted at the very back, behind the rear axle line. Drive runs forward to the front wheels when selected. Four cylinders in a kei engine is the Sambar's signature, and the rear weight bias is why it is the one people pick for traction with an empty bed.

Odometer: 33,972 miles, approximately 54,700 km. Subaru's EN07 is a 658cc inline-four rather than a triple, so it turns over with four smaller reciprocating masses than anything else in the class, and the model's surviving population covers a wide span of readings.

How this one is set up

The Sambar's layout does the heavy lifting here regardless of how the front axle is specified: a 658cc four-cylinder mounted behind the rear wheels, a completely flat bed floor with no drivetrain running beneath it, and a weight distribution that no other kei truck shares. Subaru kept that arrangement for decades after everybody else had abandoned it.

Between $8,000 and $12,000 the market moves from ordinary trucks to better ones: later chassis, lower readings, fuel injection, air conditioning, or a factory option that is hard to find. The step up from the mid band is usually specification rather than condition.

Getting it to you

Built in 1991, it sits the far side of the 25-year federal import cut-off. Customs entry, import documentation and title work are all done here, and we arrange transport to any state. Listed at $9,995 — tell us it is the one and we will take it off the market.
