SE-series Bongo Brawny: the short version
The Bongo Brawny is the one-tonne version of Mazda's Bongo, a cab-over light truck a size class above the kei trucks. These were sold with Mazda's 2.2-litre diesel four and, in the heavier specifications, with dual rear wheels on the back axle. It is a working vehicle built to carry a genuine tonne rather than the 350kg a kei truck is rated for.
The odometer shows 11,263 miles, about 18,100 km as the Japanese-market instrument was marked. That is a low reading for a car of this kind coming out of the domestic fleet.
The practical side
A van with a two-speed transfer case is an uncommon specification: the enclosed body is usually a sign of urban delivery work, and low range is a sign of the opposite. Together they describe a vehicle set up to reach somewhere difficult with its load kept dry.
Between $12,000 and $20,000 a Japanese van is being priced for a specific reason: a scarce specification, a passenger conversion, or a chassis that very few of came out of Japan. This is not the volume end of the market.
