S200-series Hijet: the short version
The S200 codes are the rear-drive Hijets of 1999 to 2004, the first drawn to the enlarged kei standard. Daihatsu moved the range to the twin-cam, 12-valve EF-VE version of its 659cc three-cylinder with fuel injection, which was a real step in refinement over the single-cam engine before it. The Jumbo extended cab, which steals a little bed length to give the driver a reclining seat, belongs to this generation.
Odometer at 65,800 miles, call it 105,900 km. Daihatsu kei vehicles of this period arrive across a wide band of readings, and this one falls in the middle of it.
How this one is set up
Rear-wheel drive is the standard configuration for Daihatsu's kei commercials and the one most of them were built in. Without a front axle and transfer case there is less to service, less to go wrong and slightly less weight to carry around, which on a vehicle with a 660cc engine is not nothing. For sealed surfaces — a yard, an estate road, a campus, a market — it is all the drivetrain the job needs.
Under $5,000 is the entry point for an imported kei truck in the United States, and it generally means an older vehicle with a higher reading on the clock rather than a compromised one. Our kei truck price guide sets out what separates the bands.
Buying this one
Because it was built in 2000, the federal 25-year exemption applies and the usual FMVSS and EPA conformity requirements fall away. Customs entry, import documentation and title work are all done here, and we arrange transport to any state. You can also watch the walkaround video above before deciding. The figure is $4,060, and a message is all it takes to put it aside.
