Where the Hijet fits
Daihatsu replaced the EF three-cylinder with the twin-cam, 12-valve KF series in the later Hijets, and kept everything else that makes the model what it is: a cab-over truck or van engineered to the 3.40-metre kei limit, offered in more factory body styles than any competitor. The Hijet has been in production under that name since 1960.
The reading is 25,707 miles, which converts to roughly 41,400 km. Daihatsu's EF three-cylinder was fitted to the Hijet across two decades and several body styles, so the engine family has a very long track record behind it.
Putting it to work
A four-wheel-drive Hijet is the configuration Daihatsu sold to Japanese farms and construction trades, and the body options reflect it — this is the chassis that got the tippers, the lifts and the power-take-off drives. Drive runs rearward from the under-cab engine with a selectable front axle, so the truck behaves as a rear-driver on tarmac and brings the front wheels in only when asked.
Above $12,000 a kei truck is being priced on specification rather than transport. A 2019 Daihatsu Hijet in this band is normally carrying hardware or a configuration that the ordinary working trucks do not.
Ordering and delivery
The paperwork side — import documentation and title — is our job, and we deliver anywhere in the US. The figure is $12,800, and a message is all it takes to put it aside.
