Hijet: the short version

The current Hijet is the S500 and S510 series, and it is the first Hijet in decades to abandon the under-seat engine: Daihatsu moved to a front-mounted KF three-cylinder with the cab set back behind it, which changed the crash structure and the driving position together. The 658cc KF is a twin-cam, 12-valve unit, and four-wheel-drive versions continue to be offered with a locking rear differential.

It carries 10 miles, which is delivery mileage rather than a service history — about 16 km on the gauge as it is marked.

Putting it to work

The appeal of a 4WD Hijet is the combination of a sub-3.5-metre footprint with drive to all four wheels: it will get into a space a pickup cannot and still haul itself out of a wet field.
