About the Hijet

Daihatsu's present Hijet runs the 658cc KF twin-cam triple and is built on the S500 platform, which moved the engine forward of the cab rather than under the seats. The result is a kei truck with a conventional bonnet line, modern restraint systems and the same 3.40-metre overall length the class has had since 1998. Factory body options still run from flat bed to hydraulic tipper.

It carries 3,833 miles — about 6,200 km, the figure the gauge was actually calibrated in. That is at the lower end of the spread for Daihatsu kei vehicles leaving the Japanese market.

Why this configuration

A four-wheel-drive Hijet is the configuration Daihatsu sold to Japanese farms and construction trades, and the body options reflect it — this is the chassis that got the tippers, the lifts and the power-take-off drives. Drive runs rearward from the under-cab engine with a selectable front axle, so the truck behaves as a rear-driver on tarmac and brings the front wheels in only when asked.

This is new or near-new stock rather than a used import. The figure reflects a current-production vehicle with delivery mileage on it, which is a different purchase from a 1990s truck at the same money even though both are kei trucks.
