Background on the Hijet

Daihatsu's present Hijet runs the 658cc KF twin-cam triple and is built on the S500 platform, which moved the engine forward of the cab rather than under the seats. The result is a kei truck with a conventional bonnet line, modern restraint systems and the same 3.40-metre overall length the class has had since 1998. Factory body options still run from flat bed to hydraulic tipper.

It carries 10,540 miles — about 17,000 km, the figure the gauge was actually calibrated in. That is at the lower end of the spread for Daihatsu kei vehicles leaving the Japanese market.

What the specification means

The appeal of a 4WD Hijet is the combination of a sub-3.5-metre footprint with drive to all four wheels: it will get into a space a pickup cannot and still haul itself out of a wet field. Daihatsu built this chassis for working customers, with the engine under the cab floor driving the rear axle and a selectable front axle for when the surface demands it.
